My next project is a variation urban sketching with different elements that interest me added together to try and make a unique overview of scenes in Cornwall. A mixture of drawings and prints with the main focuses being man-made structures such as buildings or statues but with traditional Cornish elements within such as the sea or moorland. They are going to be a mix of different sights that could be seen in towns, people going about their business, weather effecting the light, buildings filled with people and man made structures interacting with nature e.g. statues in parks. I aim to show a clear balance between clear cut lines of buildings and the gestural lines of the people showing the different between the bricks that don’t move and the constantly moving people. Im going to work on my use of composition by playing with the contrast of detailed and rough drawing to lead the eye around the page to parts of the landscape that might have been over looked. Im excited at the possibility of also turning these drawings in prints, a medium I have always been interested in as I like the expected element of the ink whether its smudging or a blob in an unexpected place, it takes the image on a path I could never plan. They will all extend to the edge of the pages and create the illusion of the scenes extending further by evidence of the things just out of sight. I plan to use minimal colour, mostly black and white but the occasional colour that seems even brighter because the monotone around. I want the project not just for people who are tourists and want a reminder of what they have seen but also the locals who have an interest in what’s around them, that like reevaluating what the known and see every day in a different and better way
I recently took a trip to the art gallery of Hauser and Wirth in Somerset, to see the garden and the exhibition by Rashid Johnson. Its a very unique and interesting place in the middle of rolling English countryside, we got lost in a few little villages on the way!

The first room was what struck me the most with forest like installations mixed with abstract sculpture. I really like the primitive element with the rough sculptures and drawings that looked like they had been done by hand. The whole thing makes me think of hammer hitting a brick, its very in your face and uncompromising with thick black lines and edges. The most interesting thing was the black soap and shea butter that were used in the artwork. Using such an unusual material such as black soap made out of ash from West African trees and plants is very interesting and should have advertised better rather than a note at the end of the gallery.

I saw some work by William de Kooning in the Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam, i was suprised by the work that i saw. i found it very inspiring the way that he created inspiration from the paintings itself. Starting of a work without unknowing the end result and following the inspiration as the work flowed.

Ik zag wat werk van William de Kooning in het Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam, ik was verrast door het werk dat ik zag. Ik vond het heel inspirerend de manier waarop hij inpiratie uit de schilderijen zelf creeerde. Begin van een werk zonder het eindresultaat te onkenderen en de inspiratie te volgen als het werk stroomde.
now i don’t normally write things like this, i want to keep a degree of professionalism 😉 But this may be one of the biggest achievements of my artistic career! Yesterday i took a day trip to Brussels and went to the Musee Magritte museum. It was a gorgeous collection of work and in the last room i came across a painting that was very familiar. Magritte has been a favourite artist of mine since i was a child. Yesterday i realised that throughout my travelling i have had the pleasure to see the Empire of light series.

i feel very lucky that i have had the opportunity to travel around and see so much amazing art.
In my trip to Paris the things that stood out most was my trip to the Centre Pompidou. On the outside it doesn’t look that impressive, i was most expecting the inside to be a building site but was very excited by the outside escalator. But it houses on the most impressive collections of art that i have seen with up to date temporary exhibitions and an very impressive permanent collection. I felt a bit like i was in a maze, every new room i walked into was full of more and more amazing art. Pieces that i have studying in books and seen on the internet. every time i think its finished there was another room filled with even more beautiful art.
Tijdens mijn reis Parijs was het centraal gelegen Pompidou het allerbeste ziet het er neit zo indrukwekkend uit, ik verwachette dat het een bouwplaats was, maar was erg enthousiast over de outdoor roltrap. Maar het huisvest de meest indrukwekkende kunstcollecties die ik heb gezien met up to date tijdelijke tentoonstellingen en een zeer indrukwekkende permanente collectie. Ik voelde me alsof ik in een doolhof was, elke nieuwe kamer die ik liep was vol met meer en meer geweldige kunst. Stukken die ik heb gelezen in boeken en gezien op internet. Elke keer dat ik denk dat hat klaar is, was er een kamer vol mooie kunst.
Doing a trip to the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France i saw a few paintings by Jackson Pollock. I have never been a big fan of Pollock’s work but after seeing his work in person is very different than in books. Only now do i get to see the depth of these works, it had an amazing verity of marks and layer upon layer of paint. There is so much more them than first appears.

Ik heb nog nooit een grote fan van het werk van Pollock’s geweest, maar na het zien van zijn werk in eigen persoon is heel anders dan in de boeken. Alleen nu krijg ik om de diepte van deze werken te zien, het had een geweldige waarheid van merken en laag over laag verf. Er is zo veel meer te zijn dan het eerste gezicht lijkt.

Recently i had the amazing opportunity to go on an art trip to Paris where i saw an exhibition of Cy Twombly at the centre pompidou.
I got the strange sense that there was a secret underneath the paint, something that i couldn’t quite see. these drawings are really inspiring to me because recently i have been trying to experiment with creating and obscuring marks, which i see is the main focus here. I love the black and white nature of some of his work, seeing these pieces have reminded me of the power that stark black and white can create. I really like the way that he uses pencil in an abstract way, most of the artwork i see recently only use art in a traditional way. The way he draws has an instinctual element that makes them fresh and original.
Toen ik voor het eerst deze tentoonstelling zag, had ik het vreemde gevoel dat er een geheim onder de verf, iets wat ik kon niet goed zien. Deze tekeningen zijn echt inspirerend voor mij, omdat ik onlangs geprobeerd om te experimenteren met het maken en verduisterende merken, en ik geloof dit is de belangrijkste focus van zijn werk. Ik hou van de zwarte en witte aard van zijn werk, het zien van deze stukken me herinneren aan de macht die grimmige zwart-wit kan creëren. Ik hou echt van de manier waarop hij potlood gebruikt op een abstracte manier, het grootste deel van het werk dat ik ben gewoon een tijdelijk gebruik kunst op een traditionele manier. De manier waarop hij tekent heeft een instinctieve element dat ze fris en origineel maakt.

I was really struck by the humanity shown in it all, everything that i saw was filled with such personality. There was so much to look at that each of her ensembles were a bit overwhelming. But the chaos adds to the charm and the sense that this has come from another person, who maybe isn’t that dissimilar to me. There are so many different elements that balance each other out such as very serious an adult themes, like a text about abuse with almost childlike joyful drawings. I really liked that there are pictures of the work being made, they show the journey that the artist took in creating these theatre like scenes. I love that there is something fresh and original about these works that i could look at for hours.
Ik was echt getroffen door dat de hele mensheid, alles wat ik zag was gevuld met zo’n persoonlijkheid. Er was zoveel te zein dat elk van heer ensenbles waren een beetjie overweldigend. Maar de chaos toegevoegd aan de charme en het gevoel dat het afkomstig is van een andere persoon, die misschien niet zo verschillende van mij. Er zijn zo zeel verschillende elementen die elkaar in evenwicht te brengen, zoals een tekst over misbruik met bijna kinderlijke vrolijke tekeningen. Ik vond dat er foto’s gemaakt van het werk, dat ze reis die de kunstenaar nam in het creeren van deze theatrale scenes laten zien. Ik hou van dat ik kon uren naar kijken.
Throughout the this exhibition week i was given a lot of choices which i hadn’t had control over before, which was very exciting such as lighting and the use of a camera with a tripod to create a stop motion animation of the process of my work. It was a very new experience to look on such a large canvas and I came up with a loose plan of drawing 5 lines with markers across the wall, trying to split up the largest areas. Then taking away 5 lines with white paint from the most concentrated spots. this was my idea to work outwards a bit with mark pen lines and then back into the center taking away lines. This way i would be constantly moving the shapes around and revealing new images. I used white paint to erase certain lines in the more concentrated places to make new shapes and inspire images.
